Lotion, Cream or Oil? How to Choose a Body Moisturizer for Dry Skin

Walk down any body care aisle and you'll see three kinds of moisturizer: lotions, creams and oils. They all help dry skin, but they're made differently and they feel different on your skin. Knowing the difference makes it much easier to choose.

The short answer

  • Lotion: light, spreads easily, sinks in fast. Best for daily, all-over use and warm weather.
  • Cream: thicker and richer. Best for very dry skin, winter, and rough spots like elbows, knees and heels.
  • Body oil: adds shine and softness and helps seal in moisture. Best on damp skin right after a shower, or mixed with lotion.

What makes them different?

Most moisturizers are a mix of water and oils. Lotions contain more water, so they feel light and absorb quickly. Creams contain more oils and butters (such as shea or cocoa butter), so they sit on the skin a little longer and feel richer. Body oils contain little or no water at all. They don't add water to your skin, but they form a light layer that helps keep in the moisture that's already there.

Which one is right for you?

If your skin is normal to slightly dry

A daily body lotion is usually enough. It's quick to apply, doesn't feel heavy under clothes and works well in hot, humid weather.

If your skin is very dry, tight or flaky

Choose a body cream, ideally one with cocoa butter or shea butter. Apply it at night when you have time to let it sink in, and focus on the driest areas.

If your skin looks dull or ashy

Try a body oil on damp skin after your shower. It gives a healthy-looking glow and makes skin feel smooth. Many people like carrot oils or serum oils for this.

For cracked heels, elbows and lips

Use something thick. A rich cream or a layer of petroleum jelly at night works well for heels and elbows, and a lip balm for lips.

How to get the most out of your moisturizer

  1. Apply to damp skin. Pat yourself dry after showering, leaving skin slightly damp, then moisturize within a few minutes.
  2. Use lukewarm water. Very hot showers strip away natural oils and make dryness worse.
  3. Layer when you need to. On very dry days, apply lotion first, then a few drops of oil on top to lock it in.
  4. Don't forget your hands and feet. They get washed and walked on the most, so they dry out fastest.
  5. Choose a gentle cleanser. A moisturizing bar soap or shower gel helps you avoid stripping your skin before you even start.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use body lotion on my face?

It's best not to. Face skin is thinner and more sensitive, and body products can be heavier or more fragranced. Use a face cream instead.

How often should I moisturize?

At least once a day, ideally after your shower. Very dry skin often benefits from a second application at night.

Should I patch test a new product?

Yes. Apply a small amount to your inner arm and wait 24 hours before using it all over, especially if you have sensitive skin.
